macOS 27 Now Natively Supports Ultrawide Monitors

macOS, which has supported ultrawide displays in some limited forms, will add native support for ultrawide monitors on Mac and MacBook starting with version 27 Golden Gate.

This new feature was announced at WWDC 26 this week.

Apple announced that it can now use higher resolutions like 5K at 120Hz refresh rates on ultrawide displays, and the display arrangement maintains its settings, providing a seamless experience each time it connects.

macOS 27, scheduled to launch this fall, is compatible only with Apple Silicon-based Macs. Existing Intel-based Macs cannot receive the macOS 27 update.

Ultrawide on Mac, Vision Pro, and Apple TV 4K

Since Apple's Mac or MacBook products do not have ultrawide panels installed and there are no rumors about future ultrawide Apple products, this update is primarily for users who connect external monitors for work or gaming.

These 21:9 aspect ratio monitors typically range from 29 inches to 49 inches in size and have resolutions such as 2560x1080, 3440x1440, 5120x2160 (5K2K).

However, Apple has consistently shown interest in ultrawide. At the end of 2024, Apple released visionOS 2.2 and added ultrawide support for the Mac virtual display on Apple Vision Pro. Also, at the end of 2024, Apple released tvOS 18.2 and added support for ultrawide monitors, projectors, and TVs on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation).

Ultrawide monitors are becoming increasingly popular in other fields. All 21:9 OLED monitors to be released in 2026 can be checked here.
