According to the Washington Post (WP) on the 15th (local time), the Trump administration confirmed that Anthropic had expanded pre-access rights to its latest AI model Mithos beyond the originally approved government scope, and has been reviewing export control measures for several weeks.
According to White House officials knowledgeable about the matter, Anthropic submitted a list of 111 institutions that could have priority access to Mithos a few weeks ago, and the government reviewed and approved it. At the time, concerns were raised that Mithos could significantly enhance hacking capabilities, making it a subject of management at the national security level.
However, Anthropic subsequently granted additional access rights to approximately 50 institutions without government approval. The WP explained, "The White House did not even receive a list of the additional beneficiary institutions for several days, and during this process, doubts about the company's security control capabilities grew."
The controversy expanded further as additional lists were submitted. The administration confirmed that one of them was a South Korean telecommunications company suspected of being connected to China (South Korean telecommunications company). The company name has not been disclosed.
Among domestic telecommunications companies, only SK Telecom is included in the list of companies participating in Project Glasswing. However, SK Telecom is known to be included in the 111 institutions granted access rights to Mithos with prior approval from the US administration. For this reason, it is not yet confirmed which Korean telecommunications company White House officials took issue with.
