"Korea is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world for us. It wouldn't be surprising if the current ranking of 12th in per-capita usage climbs to single digits soon."
Chris Chourie, International Director of Anthropic, the U.S. AI company that created generative AI 'Claude,' made this assessment of the Korean market on the 17th.
Anthropic held a press briefing at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul on that day and announced the official opening of its Seoul office. The company will establish an office and dedicated organization in Korea and begin full-scale business operations.
Chourie and Kil Young Choi, Korea Representative who took office last month, attended the briefing together. Choi is an expert with over 30 years of experience in enterprise software, cloud, and AI adoption at companies such as Snowflake Korea, Google Cloud, and Microsoft.
Anthropic sees high potential in the Korean market. Choi said, "In fact, Korea was more prepared than Anthropic itself." This is because Korea created one of the world's few comprehensive AI bills, the 'AI Basic Law,' which has been in effect since January of this year, the government set a goal to become one of the 'Top 3 AI Powers' by 2030, and the country is equipped with infrastructure such as memory semiconductors.
Actual usage is also high. Choi introduced that Korea ranks within the top 12 among 116 countries based on per-capita Claude usage, citing Anthropic's 'Economic Index' analysis. Particularly, Choi explained that Korea's Claude usage exceeds 3.5 times the expected level relative to its population size.
