Microsoft (MS) has decided to extend the support period for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) by one year, providing security patches until October 2027.

According to IT media outlet Ars Technica on the 25th (local time), MS changed the end date of the Windows 10 ESU program from October 12, 2026, to October 12, 2027. The change has been reflected in related support pages and official blogs. As a result, Windows 10 users will be able to receive security updates for an additional year without any further action.

Although regular updates for Windows 10 ended last October, the adoption rate of Windows 11 was only slightly higher than that of Windows 10 at the time. Concerns about security vulnerabilities after support termination led to the introduction of an optional ESU program, which provided free extended updates. This extension further prolongs the support period.

The slow transition to Windows 11 is a contributing factor. Windows 11 requires specific CPUs and TPM modules, forcing some users to purchase new PCs. The rising cost of memory and storage devices due to the proliferation of AI has also increased system replacement costs. Some users have also delayed upgrades due to resistance to the AI-centric operating system changes.
