A military information protection agreement between the Korean and Canadian governments passed the Cabinet meeting on the 27th.
The government held a Cabinet meeting presided over by President Lee Jae-myung at the Blue House that day and deliberated and resolved on the 'Agreement on the Protection of Military and Defense Secret Information between the Government of the Republic of Korea and the Government of Canada.'
This follows an agreement made between President Lee and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Gyeongju in October last year.
At the time, the two leaders announced the completion of negotiations in a joint statement, saying that it "provides a safe and reliable framework for the exchange and protection of secret information to support deepened cooperation in defense, security, and defense industry," and stated that "a legal foundation is being established to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of defense procurement, defense industry security, research, and operational coordination."
This agreement does not require parliamentary ratification approval, so it is expected to take effect after going through administrative procedures such as signatures by both governments.
According to Article 89 of the Constitution, treaties with foreign governments, including agreements, must go through Cabinet deliberation and resolution.
