According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 19th (local time), the U.S. administration is promoting large-scale weapons sales to three countries: the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, and Jordan. The UAE will receive air defense systems, bombs, and radars, while Kuwait will be provided with air defense equipment worth approximately $8 billion.
The U.S. State Department announced this morning that it has approved the sale of F-16 combat ammunition, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD), and a drone defense system (FS-LIDS) to the UAE for approximately $8.5 billion. Kuwait will purchase an advanced radar system from RTX, a low-altitude air defense and missile defense sensor, for $8 billion. Jordan is set to receive aircraft ammunition sales worth $70.5 million.
Additionally, the U.S. administration has approved weapon purchases by the UAE worth approximately $7 billion. This is an expansion of previously agreed weapons contracts and was excluded from the State Department's public disclosure.
The relevant contracts are reported to include the sale of approximately $5.6 billion worth of Patriot PAC-3 missiles and approximately $1.32 billion worth of Chinook helicopters to the UAE.
Meanwhile, some transactions targeting the UAE are subject to emergency provisions under the U.S. "Arms Control Act." This allows transactions to proceed quickly without going through congressional review procedures. Typically, major weapons exports are completed over several years through congressional approval, negotiations between the purchasing country and manufacturers, and other processes.
