With the Iran war ongoing for over two months, there are criticisms that Donald Trump, the US president, is delusional in believing that "a little more pressure will make Iran surrender."
The New York Times (NYT) pointed out on the 5th (local time) that President Trump has been searching for a "magic formula" to achieve victory in Iran, such as the air strike on Iran's nuclear facilities last June, the large-scale joint operation with Israel at the end of February, the blockade of Iranian ports, and the Hormuz Strait ship movement operation (Project Freedom).
Experts point out that Trump's confidence that these tactics will lead to Iran's surrender has serious flaws.
Ali Baez, director of Iran affairs at the US think tank International Crisis Group (ICG), said, "Whenever pressure fails to produce the intended results, he (Trump) has sought new coercive measures, believing they will magically bring victory." He added, "He always believes that 'a little more pressure will do it.'"
Baez also pointed out that while pressure may be effective over time, "pressure without opening the door to dialogue is a futile effort."
He continued, "President Trump fails to understand that no agreement can be reached unless he offers Iran a way out that preserves its face and proposes a mutually beneficial agreement (not surrender or submission), even if he applies more pressure."
Regarding President Trump's argument that time is on his side, Susan Maloni, director of the Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution and an Iran expert, said, "The US can certainly inflict further damage on the Iranian economy, but the Iranian economy has withstood greater pressure than any other economy in history. As a result, there has never been a case where the regime collapsed or adopted a more rational stance."
