ㅇ On January 12, 2026, Indonesian Defense Minister Sharif Shamsudin visited Pakistan and held talks with the Pakistan Air Force Chief of Staff and military leadership, discussing a large-scale defense contract including the introduction of the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet and unmanned aerial vehicles(drones).
ㅇ According to reports, the two countries are holding advanced discussions on the introduction of approximately 40 JF-17 Block III aircraft, a fourth-generation multi-purpose fighter jet jointly developed by Pakistan and China. The negotiations reportedly include not only aircraft acquisition but also Pakistani-made Shahpar(Shahpar) unmanned aerial vehicles capable of reconnaissance and strike missions, air defense systems, and comprehensive training programs for pilots and maintenance personnel.
ㅇ Indonesian Defense Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Rico Ricardo stated that the talks focused on strengthening strategic dialogue and communication between defense institutions, and exploring long-term mutually beneficial cooperation opportunities. While both countries' military authorities have formalized the fact of the talks, he clarified that no final decisions have been made on specific contract terms.
ㅇ Indonesia's move appears to be part of Indonesia's 'military modernization strategy' aimed at replacing aging fighter aircraft and strengthening maritime defense capabilities. In particular, the JF-17 offers high cost-effectiveness at approximately 25–30 million dollars per unit, making it a practical alternative being considered for Indonesia, which requires large-scale air force operations.
