Filipina Mary Jane Veloso was sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking but was repatriated to her home country thanks to the efforts of the Philippine government. Arrested in 2010 on charges of carrying drugs while seeking a domestic worker position, Veloso claimed she was unaware of the drugs being concealed. The Philippine government arrested members of the drug syndicate who deceived Veloso and requested leniency from Indonesia. Finally, in 2024, Veloso was repatriated to the Philippines. Recently, with the pardon decision of the Philippine president, she was released after 16 years and expressed joy at reuniting with her family.
