Vera, a 12-year-old girl from Russia who was paralyzed due to a car accident, can now walk again thanks to nerve implant technology in China. The surgery, performed at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, used a closed-loop spinal cord neural interface system to help nerve signals from Vera's brain bypass the damaged part of her spinal cord. Electrodes implanted on the spinal cord membrane capture and amplify weak nerve signals, stimulating nerve tissue so that leg muscles can be reactivated. In addition to the surgery, Vera also underwent intensive rehabilitation for three months with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The combination of nerve stimulation and rehabilitation exercises enabled Vera to regain sensation in her legs and the ability to actively move her lower limbs.
