Google Maps service has begun to blur satellite images of military facilities and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in South Korea.

NK News, a U.S.-based North Korea specialist media outlet, reported on September 9th local time that dozens of military facilities and more than 400 square kilometers of domestic territory, which were previously viewable as high-resolution images on Google Maps and Google Earth, have been replaced with mosaic-level low-resolution images.

Images of key security facilities such as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) south of the Military Demarcation Line, major military bases of South Korea and the United States, and the Cheong Wa Dae area have been effectively obscured.

Google Maps has also discontinued coordinate display functions for North Korean regions within approximately 35 kilometers north of the DMZ and throughout South Korea.

This measure is expected to make it more difficult for North Korea to obtain high-resolution images of sensitive facilities in South Korea.

However, there are also concerns that this could inadvertently reveal the most sensitive areas in South Korea to North Korea.
