In the past five years, 355 police officers have been disciplined or investigated for mishandling cases. The number has been increasing annually since 2021, and this year it has already broken the annual record. However, only one officer was dismissed, and non-disciplinary actions such as cautions and warnings accounted for 77.5% of all cases. Kim Yeji, a lawmaker of the People Power Party, emphasized that the police agency should analyze the causes and come up with solutions since the problem of mishandling cases continues to occur. The National Police Agency has issued a special alert on public integrity and strengthened service inspections in the wake of recent issues such as the false closure of the Jeju missing person case.
