The Chinese exhibition team at the 16th Gwangju Biennale has decided to withdraw from the pavilion exhibition in protest of the name "Taiwan Pavilion." The Chinese side strongly objected to the use of the name, which appears to recognize Taiwan as an independent country, and the Chinese Embassy in Korea also criticized it as a violation of the "One China" principle. The Gwangju Biennale Foundation stated its position that using the abbreviation of the institution's name was acceptable, but due to criticism from the domestic and international art world and delays in artwork installation, it ultimately approved the change of the Taiwan Pavilion name. However, as a result, the Chinese pavilion team withdrew from the exhibition, leaving the conflict unresolved. With the opening of the exhibition just two days away, it remains unclear whether the conflict over the pavilion project, which is considered a major axis along with the main exhibition of the Gwangju Biennale, will be resolved.
