Police have begun a comprehensive review of approximately 310,000 missing person cases concluded in the past three years. This follows controversy surrounding the alleged premature closure of a missing person case on Jeju Island. Going forward, confirming the safety of missing persons through non-face-to-face methods such as phone calls will be prohibited, and direct face-to-face meetings will be the principle. Additionally, the introduction of a missing person case closure approval process by criminal investigation division chiefs, and daily review meetings chaired by police station chiefs are planned to strengthen the missing person investigation process. A system for deploying at least two personnel during nighttime and holidays is also expected to be established, along with the reorganization of manpower and work systems for missing person investigations.
