The amendment to the Korean Criminal Procedure Act has passed the National Assembly, abolishing the prosecution's direct investigative powers and making the police responsible for investigating all cases. As a result, most complaints and reports will be received by the police, who will complete the investigation within three months and decide whether to send the case to the prosecutor's office. The prosecutor will then decide whether to file charges within three months, setting the total case processing time at six months. During the investigation process, the police can only request supplementary investigations from the prosecutor and cannot directly investigate suspects or witnesses or collect evidence. This amendment has also sparked controversy over the neutrality of police investigations.
