Apple maintains dominance in the OLED IT market...Shipment volume expected to be lower due to rising memory prices
It was confirmed on the 29th that Samsung Electronics System LSI Business Division will supply display driver ICs (DDIs) for the 8-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) iPad mini expected to be launched by Apple in the second half of this year. The DDI used in the OLED iPad mini is a TED (T-con Embedded Driver IC) type product that embeds a timing controller (T-con).
An industry official said, "This year, Samsung Electronics System LSI Business Division will supply TED for Apple's OLED iPad mini, and the expected shipment volume by the end of this year is around 1.0 to 1.5 million units." This falls short of the previously anticipated shipment volume range of 2 to 3 million units. It appears that Apple is conservatively adjusting its iPad mini business plan due to rising memory semiconductor prices.
TED type products, which embed T-cons in DDIs, are mainly applied to small IT devices. Samsung Display will mass-produce OLEDs for Apple's iPad mini. Samsung Display has been applying TED type DDIs to some of Samsung Electronics' OLED smartphones and IT OLED products.

Since 2024, Apple has exclusively supplied DDIs and T-cons for the 11-inch and 13-inch OLED iPad Pro models. The OLED iPad Pro uses a separate DDI and T-con configuration instead of TED. LG Display and Samsung Display are currently mass-producing these panels.
Samsung Electronics System LSI Business Division will also supply DDIs and T-cons for the 14-inch and 16-inch OLED MacBook Pro models scheduled to be launched by Apple in the second half of this year.

The shipment volume forecast for Apple's OLED MacBooks is also decreasing. The initial forecast for this year's shipments, which was expected to be 2 to 3 million units, has recently dropped to around 1.5 million units. OLED MacBook sales could affect the expansion of the IT OLED market.
Meanwhile, the supply chain for OLED iPad Pro DDIs will be diversified starting next year. Samsung Display's iPad Pro OLED DDIs will continue to be supplied by Samsung Electronics System LSI, while LG Display's iPad Pro OLED DDIs will be supplied by LX Semicon.
