Google will change its Android backup policy starting July 7, 2026, where all backup data will be counted towards your Google account storage quota. Previously, only media in Google Photos and MMS photos/videos used up quota space. This change applies to new users and will be gradually rolled out for existing users. Google claims the impact will not be significant, with an average increase in quota usage of about 40 MB. Users can now choose which data and apps they want to back up through the Backup menu on their Android device.
