If you've been patiently waiting for NVIDIA to release a native Linux app for its cloud gaming service GeForce NOW, your wait is finally over. Announced earlier this month at CES, NVIDIA today released the beta version of the native app. However, it's worth noting that GeForce NOW's expansion into the Linux territory starts with Ubuntu (version 24.04 or later).

"The new app provides a seamless native experience that integrates smoothly into Linux desktop workflows. This transforms compatible Linux systems into high-performance GeForce RTX-based rigs, enabling you to stream supported PC titles directly from the cloud at up to 5K resolution and 120 frames per second, or 1080p at 360fps," NVIDIA stated.

NVIDIA hasn't yet mentioned plans to expand support to other Linux distributions. However, Ubuntu is generally recognized as the most popular Linux distribution. While the exact market share varies depending on the source and whether you're looking at the overall Linux market or a specific sector (enterprise, etc.), SQ Magazine reports that Ubuntu holds the largest market share in the Linux market at 33.9%.

That being said, gamer sentiment may differ. For example, Steam's latest survey results show Arch Linux and Linux Mint to be more widespread than Ubuntu. However, Linux Mint is actually based on Ubuntu, while Arch Linux is based on Debian.

Nevertheless, Ubuntu is a relatively polished and user-friendly Linux OS, making it a good starting point for NVIDIA's initial efforts. With this Ubuntu support, GeForce NOW's reach extends in numerous directions beyond Windows, Windows on Arm (beta), macOS, Chromebooks, mobile devices, smart TVs, and other devices. Additionally, NVIDIA's emphasis on "starting with Ubuntu 24.04 or later" when describing GeForce NOW's native Linux entry suggests that more Linux distributions will be added at some point.

Previously, running GeForce NOW on Linux required workarounds like using GeForce Infinity, Wine, or accessing it through a web browser. Valve's Steam Deck also offered a dedicated Linux experience, but it was optimized for handheld device specifications with a maximum resolution of 1200p and 90fps.

"The beta Linux app is designed for PCs and laptops, providing a similar experience to the existing GeForce NOW apps for Windows and macOS," NVIDIA explains.

Like other versions of the GeForce NOW app, Ubuntu users will also benefit from DLSS 4 upscaling, ray tracing support, and access to server pods powered by GPUs up to GeForce RTX 5080 level.
