"Turn off 'this' in KakaoTalk by today, or everything will be leaked" I was so surprised, but is it fake news?
“You have to turn off this function in KakaoTalk by the 11th. Otherwise, all your personal information will be leaked. Tell your parents too.”
Recently, videos and posts on YouTube, social media (SNS), and online communities have been spreading, claiming that KakaoTalk's usage pattern collection should be refused. The content claims that Kakao forcibly collects users' conversation patterns for use. However, Kakao's position is that it is 'fake news'.

There is a claim that Kakao collects users' conversation history, usage patterns, and viewed content to use as learning data for artificial intelligence (AI).

The reason why such claims have spread widely is due to the terms and conditions introduced by KakaoTalk in December last year, which took effect on the 4th.
The terms and conditions state, "Service usage records and usage patterns can be analyzed or summarized mechanically to provide various and convenient functions, personalized content recommendations, and advertisements," reflecting what Kakao needs ahead of the launch of its AI service 'Kanana' next month.
If users do not express their objection within 7 days of the effective date, they are deemed to have agreed to the revised terms and conditions. As a result, the phrase "service record analysis and utilization" has raised concerns about "privacy infringement," leading to collective backlash from users.
In response, Kakao said, "The intention of revising the terms and conditions has been distorted." Just because there is a phrase like "collection of usage records" in the terms and conditions does not mean that user data can be forcibly taken. According to the Personal Information Protection Act, which is the upper law, separate consent must be obtained from users.

However, Kakao has decided to delete the controversial phrase in consideration of user concerns. The company plans to delete the phrase "service usage records and usage patterns can be mechanically analyzed and summarized to provide personalized content recommendations and advertisements," and the revised terms and conditions will take effect from the 21st.
