Semiconductor Supply Shortage Threatens 20% Surge in Consumer Electronics Prices

Chip shortages threaten 20% rise in consumer electronics prices

- January 1, 2026 (Financial Times)

Rising AI Demand is driving up memory chip prices, and smartphone, PC, and appliance prices could rise by as much as 20% this year.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix account for more than 70% of the global DRAM market, and orders for 2026 have already exceeded production capacity.

Memory shortages are expected to continue, with a high likelihood that supply constraints will persist until 2027.

AI infrastructure investment is projected to reach $620 billion in 2026.
