The U.S. Trump administration has once again designated South Korea as a currency observation target country on the 29th (local time).
In its semi-annual report on 'Macroeconomic and Exchange Rate Policies of Major Trading Partners' reported to Congress that day, the U.S. Treasury Department stated that careful attention is necessary in currency practices and macroeconomic policies, and listed 10 countries—South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Germany, Ireland, and Switzerland—on the observation target country list.
South Korea was removed from the currency observation target country list in November 2023, more than seven years after April 2016, but was included again in November 2024, before the Trump administration took office.
Subsequently, the status was maintained in the report released in June of last year, and it remains on the observation target country list this time as well.
In accordance with the Trade Facilitation Act enacted in 2015, the United States evaluates the macroeconomic and exchange rate policies of the top 20 countries with large trading volumes, and designates them as enhanced analysis countries or observation target countries if they meet certain criteria.
