The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a measure to withdraw tariffs being imposed on Canada.

On the 11th (local time), the Financial Times (FT) reported that the measure passed 219 in favor to 211 against, with 6 Republican House members affiliated with President Trump voting to eliminate the tariffs.

While President Trump, who began imposing tariffs on Canadian products in February last year, may exercise his veto power, FT analyzed that this vote shows growing opposition within the Republican party to trade policy ahead of the November midterm elections.

Trump had warned that any Republican member of Congress who opposes the tariffs would pay the price ahead of the midterm elections.

He wrote on Truth Social, "Tariffs have helped the U.S. economy and national security, and no Republican member should destroy them."

In a survey conducted by Pew Research, 60% of American adults oppose the tariff increase, and it was found that this includes more than one-quarter of Republican supporters.

Canada's economy, the second-largest trading partner of the United States, has continued to struggle from U.S. tariffs.

Canada has also promoted boycotts of American products and efforts to reduce trade dependence on the United States in response to U.S. tariffs.

FT predicted that Democratic members will bring votes to abolish tariffs on Mexican and Brazilian products within weeks.
