Iran's side hinted at the possibility of blockading Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another key maritime chokepoint, in response to US President Donald Trump's "reverse blockade" measures on the Strait of Hormuz. Bab el-Mandeb Strait is the "gateway to the Red Sea" through which ships heading to the Suez Canal must pass, and approximately 10% of global crude oil shipments transit through it.
On the 13th (local time), Iran's state-run broadcaster (IRIB) posted a short message on X saying "Naval blockade of Iran? Bab al-mandeb Coming soon?!"
According to Iran's TASNIM News Agency, an Iranian government source said, "There is a possibility that President Trump, obsessing over foolish acts and threats, will also lose control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait." The source continued, "President Trump's threats are no longer effective and lack credibility," adding that "instead, they will result in greater financial burdens on regional energy transportation and global trade."
