From crowded commutes to the rising cost of living, Jakarta has a way of testing how well people can keep up. Jakarta Biennale 2026: Kebal turns these everyday realities into a rich conversation through contemporary art, with artists exploring resilience, displacement and the pressures of staying afloat in a changing city. The theme also connects Jakarta’s experiences with communities elsewhere facing social, political and economic upheaval, from forced relocation to the difficult choice of staying put. Held every two years since 1974, the international contemporary art event invites audiences to encounter works that question what survival looks like today, while celebrating the determination of those who continue to endure.
The biennale runs from 4 October to 28 November 2026 at Taman Ismail Marzuki’s Gedung Trisno Soemardjo, with collective spaces across Jakarta and its surroundings hosting programmes from 7 October to 24 November.
