🇺🇸🇰🇷 US-Korea Stock Market Weekly Briefing
Reference: Saturday, September 19, 2026, 08:00 KST
Korea: Closing price on September 18 / USA: Closing price on September 18
★ Key Market Outlook This Week
This week, the macro environment has become one step more challenging compared to last week. The Federal Reserve (Fed) raised the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.75~4.00% on September 16th and projected an end-of-year policy rate of 4.00~4.25%, suggesting further increases. The US 10-year Treasury yield actually exceeded 5% this week, reaching its highest level since 2007. Reuters
However, the Korean market showed a very interesting reaction on Friday. KOSPI rose by +2.66% to 6,894.23, with Samsung Electronics +3.37%, SK Hynix +6.42%, SK Square +7.04%, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics +4.36%. Semiconductors and AI led the market rebound, and foreign investors returned to net buying for the first time in eight trading days. The Korea Times
Therefore, the key structure of this week's market is:
High interest rates·high oil prices·Fed tightening 🔴 vs AI·semiconductor momentum 🟢
.
My model's Korea Market Quant decreased from 67 to 64 last week, and the Cross-Asset Score decreased from 47 to 43. However, the semiconductor·AI Quant increased from 86 to 88.
1. 🇰🇷 Weekly Analysis of the Korean Stock Market
Last week's KOSPI closing price was 6,909.91, and this Friday's closing price is 6,894.23. Therefore, the weekly change is approximately -0.23%. It is important to note that despite a +2.66% surge on Friday, the market is almost back to where it started for the week. The Korea Times
Index | Last Week's Closing Price | 9/18 Closing Price | Weekly Change | Assessment |
|---|
KOSPI | 6,909.91 | 6,894.23 | Approximately -0.23% | 🟡 High Volatility Sideways Movement |
KOSPI200 | Around 1,080 | Confirmation of latest weekly data for the same benchmark limited | — | 🟡 |
KOSDAQ | 820.64 | 827.12 | Approximately +0.79% | 🟢 Relative Strength |
Friday's KOSPI intraday high was
6,914.08. The KOSDAQ closed at 827.12, up 0.60%.
Asiae※ Since the KOSPI200's weekly high, low, and closing prices for this week, as well as the KOSPI/KOSDAQ's overall weekly highs and lows, have not been sufficiently cross-checked based on the same official data, I will refrain from inserting any numbers.
2. Important Changes in Friday's Supply and Demand
KOSPI on September 18th:
Investor | Net Buying |
|---|
Foreigners | +4,388 billion won |
Institutions | +1.5 trillion won |
Individuals | -3.59 trillion won |
Foreigners returned to net buying on the KOSPI for the first time since September 8th. The Korea Times
Importantly, this wasn't just in the cash market. According to available market compilations, foreigners' net buying of KOSPI200 futures on Friday was approximately +1.53 trillion won, while institutions were approximately -1.33 trillion won. KOSPI trading volume was approximately 25.56 trillion won. Snowshagal
In short, Friday was:
Foreigners cash +
Foreigners futures +
Institutions cash +
Semiconductors +
.
This is a higher quality rebound signal than just simple short covering (short covering).
However, since I haven't been able to confirm whether OI (open interest) has also increased, I won't definitively say it was a new long position build.
3. Programs, Options, OI

|---|
Foreigner KOSPI200 Futures 9/18 | About +1.53 trillion won |
Institutional Futures | About -1.33 trillion won |

Therefore, the most important derivative confirmation next week is whether foreigners will continue to buy spot + futures on Friday and increase OI.
4. What Changed → Why It's Important → Next Week Confirmation
Change | Why it matters | Next week |
|---|
Fed +25bp | Global discount rate increase | Further hike comments |
US10Y >5% experience | Growth stock PER compression | Whether 5% will settle |
Brent >$100 | Deterioration of Korea's import prices | Whether it will break away from $100 |
Foreigners return to spot buying | Possibility of recovery in Korea's risk appetite | Whether it will continue for 2~3 days |
Foreigners accompany futures buying | More positive than simple spot arbitrage | Whether OI will increase |
Semiconductor rebound | KOSPI EPS defense | Whether US SOX will continue |
USD/KRW rise | Burden on foreign supply and demand | Whether it will approach 1,400 |
AI safety debate | Increased volatility in AI CAPEX expectations | Whether actual CAPEX changes will occur |
The Fed not only raised rates this time but also predicted a policy interest rate of 4.00~4.25% by the end of the year. The interest rate futures market reflects a probability of about 90% for an additional 25bp hike within the year. Reuters

7. ★ Semiconductor·AI — Quant 88
On Friday, Samsung Electronics +3.37%, SK Hynix +6.42%, SK Square +7.04%, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics +4.36%.
AsiaeOn Friday, the semiconductor rally also lifted Nasdaq and S&P 500.
ReutersHowever, a new risk factor emerged this week.
US AI company executives raised safety concerns about the speed of AI development, leading to a sharp decline in global AI-related stocks, including NVIDIA on Monday. The US 10-year Treasury yield breaking 5% at the time also amplified the decline.
ReutersMeanwhile, on the supply chain side, SK Hynix is in discussions with Intel about a collaboration for memory production in the US, and Solidigm is also considering the possibility of a US NAND plant. This has both advantages in terms of tariff risk response and disadvantages in terms of increased US capital expenditures.

8. ⚡ Power Equipment
The structural logic of power demand for AI data centers and semiconductor clusters remains the same.
However, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix rejected Korea Electric Power Corporation's proposal for a KRW 25 trillion advance payment for the power grid. This means that the need for power grid investment has not disappeared, but rather that who will bear the investment cost has become a policy issue.

9. 🇺🇸 US Stock Market
Friday's closing prices are as follows.

S&P500 | 7,650.50 | +0.17% | Slight Decline |

In short:
Indices are holding up, but internal breadth is weak.
This is the biggest weakness in the US market right now.

10. Fed — This Week's Biggest Macro Event
The Fed raised the benchmark interest rate on September 16th:
3.50~3.75% → 3.75~4.00%
by 25bp.
The Fed's new outlook is 4.00~4.25% by the end of 2026 and also 4.00~4.25% by the end of 2027. In other words, it has presented at least one more rate hike as its baseline scenario. Reuters

The hike itself was expected, but the fact that the additional tightening path may last longer than anticipated is negative.
11. 🇺🇸 US Treasuries — 5% Risk Line Actually Broken
Last week, I highlighted the key risk line:
US10Y = 5.0%
This actually broke this week.
The US 10-year yield exceeded 5% during the week and reached its highest level since 2007. On Friday, it was around 5.00% according to a Reuters compilation. Reuters
Friday's separate market tally showed:
2Y around 4.72~4.74%
10Y around 4.97~5.00%
It was. Barron's
Therefore, the risk line is now replaced in three steps.

Compared to the previous week's 1,340 won range, the won has weakened considerably.

13. 🇯🇵 BOJ — Yen Carry Trade Variable
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) raised its benchmark interest rate to 1.25%, the highest level in 31 years. However, with two board members opposing the hike, the yen actually weakened. Reuters
Therefore, the immediate risk of yen carry unwinding has decreased slightly, but:
Fed tightening + BOJ tightening
The global liquidity contraction trend remains unchanged.
14. 🛢 Energy — Still the Biggest Tail Risk

16. 🌽 Grains
Unable to reliably cross-reference the weekly closing prices and weekly percentage changes for corn, wheat, and soybeans as of September 18th using a single trusted benchmark.
Therefore, arbitrary figures will not be inserted again this time.
However, current agricultural products may face new cost pressures through transportation and production costs due to record US diesel prices. According to Reuters, the average retail diesel price in the United States is about $6.45/gal, an all-time high. Reuters
17. ₿ Bitcoin / Ethereum
We were unable to secure the confirmed weekly closing prices and volatility rates of BTC and ETH at the same time on September 18th for this search as a reliable benchmark.
Therefore, we will not create numbers.
Currently, Crypto is less reliable as an indicator to confirm strong risk appetite (Risk-on) due to Fed additional tightening + long-term interest rates 5%.

24. Next Week's Biggest Events
Next week, the US-China summit, the UN General Assembly, and global PMI are key.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the United States for a meeting with Donald Trump. The market will be watching discussions on trade and tariffs, as well as the Iran war and energy supply issues. Reuters

Comprehensive Judgment
There was one very important change this week.
The US 10-year 5% that I had set as the risk line until last week was actually broken. At the same time, the Fed raised interest rates to 3.75~4.00% and suggested additional hikes by the end of the year. Brent is still $104.87. Therefore, the global macro environment has clearly deteriorated compared to last week. Reuters
However, on Friday, KOSPI recorded +2.66%, SK Hynix +6.42%, Samsung Electronics +3.37%, and foreigners bought +438.8 billion won in cash, and KOSPI 200 futures also bought about +1.53 trillion won. The Korea Times
Therefore, the market should not be simply read as “interest rates are high, so stock prices will fall”.
The current accurate structure is:
Korean semiconductor EPS growth rate is still holding a high discount rate, but its safety margin continues to decrease.
.
Next week, it is important to check KOSPI itself before US10Y → Brent → USD/KRW → Foreigners' cash and futures → Samsung Electronics·SK Hynix.
Especially if the foreigner's cash + futures simultaneous buying continues for 2~3 trading days, US10Y falls below 5% again, and KOSPI breaks through 7,000 → 7,216, there will be grounds to raise the Elliott rise 3-wave scenario, which was lowered to 39% this week, to more than 50%.
On the other hand, if US10Y >5.1%, Brent >$110, USD/KRW >1,400, foreigner's cash and futures simultaneous selling occur simultaneously for three or more, there is a high possibility that the discount rate shock will begin to overwhelm EPS even if Korean corporate performance is good.
★ Therefore, the top priority observation target next week is not the stock price itself but 'whether foreigners continue to buy Korean semiconductors even in a 5% interest rate environment.' This is the most important signal for determining the current direction of KOSPI.
