Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources(ESDM) is expanding the NZMATES(New Zealand–Maluku Access to Renewable Energy Support) project with New Zealand, aiming to improve access to renewable energy and electricity in the Maluku region.. The region's composition of small islands makes it difficult to provide stable electricity, necessitating the expansion of renewable energy utilization..
The Director General of Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation(EBTKE) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eniya Listiani Dewi, explained that the bilateral renewable energy cooperation has been ongoing for 5 years and has entered its second phase. Tiga Island previously received electricity from diesel generators for only about 6 hours a day. However, through the collaboration of the Indonesian government, New Zealand, and PT PLN, solar power plants have been improved and expanded. This will enable 24-hour electricity supply from ’24.
The project focuses on expanding community participation and supporting regional economic development, aiming to improve access to renewable energy in the Maluku region. Improved electricity supply will enable lighting, household use, and power utilization for local economic activities.
