The Fed raised rates by 25bp and said they will raise once more this year
The Fed raised the benchmark rate by 25bp to 4.00% from 3.75%. It was unanimous and marks the first hike in approximately 3 years since 2023. The statement removed language about inflation potentially being transitory and added a sentence about supply shocks including energy being reflected in prices. The dot plot's year-end median moved from 3.75% in June to 4.125%, indicating one more hike this year, and the 2027 year-end median was also 4.125%, suggesting no cuts next year. Of the 18 officials who provided projections, 16 saw at least one additional hike by year-end and 4 saw two. Growth forecast for this year rose to 2.3% and inflation forecast to 3.7%.
Chair Powell said in the press conference that the Fed will not predetermine future rate paths and will judge at each meeting. He noted that the Fed's role is not to eliminate supply shocks themselves but to prevent them from spreading through secondary and tertiary effects. During the press conference, the Dow fell 700 points, and Gandlack assessed the conference as sparse and opaque. The Dow fell 1.21%, S&P 500 fell 0.45%, Nasdaq was essentially flat at down 0.01%, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 0.63%. Samsung Electronics fell 0.39%, SK Hynix fell 0.80%, Samsung Electro-Mechanics fell 3.69%, while banks and insurers rose on expectations of rate hikes, with KB Financial rising 1.41% and DB Insurance up 3.6%. KOSDAQ rose 0.76% to 822.18 for a 4th consecutive day of gains.
Hanwha Systems rose 12.65% on UAE integrated air defense system news
Hanwha Systems rose 12.65% on reports that it is pursuing an integrated air defense system project through a local joint venture with the UAE state defense company. On the same day, securities analysts noted that laser weapon Cheonguang, which destroys small drones in seconds with a launch cost of around 2,000 won per shot, is a new growth driver. Hanwha Aerospace rose 4.1% and Korea Aerospace Industries rose 3.7%, with defense moving up from 17th to 6th in the theme rankings.

Doosan invests 968.4 billion won in copper clad laminate and cancels all treasury shares
Doosan's board of directors approved 968.4 billion won in expansion investment for its electronics division's domestic and overseas operations. This consists of 421 billion won domestic and 547.4 billion won for its Changxing subsidiary in China, representing 7.92% of equity. This investment responds to demand for artificial intelligence data center copper clad laminates, optical modules, and expanded ASIC customers, with 35 additional production lines targeted for 2028 and 2029 operation including two lines in Thailand, and securities analysts estimated the additional sales from these lines at 4.2 trillion won.

Oil prices fell 3.7% on reports that half of Saudi pipelines will recover within days
West Texas Intermediate crude oil fell 3.72% to $101.89 a barrel. Bloomberg reported that Saudi Arabia plans to restore half of the capacity of the East-West pipeline, which was halted due to a drone attack, within days, and President Trump said he received a message directly from Iran expressing its desire for negotiations. Iran said that the agreement with the United States is still valid, and China said that the two countries should return to dialogue.
Domestically, there was news that POSCO International will acquire shale gas assets in the Marcellus Basin of Pennsylvania, USA, for $550 million, and its second-quarter operating profit increased by 37% to 5.7%, while S-Oil rose 5.8% amid expectations of a prolonged Middle East situation.
