Jensen Huang Cites Cybersecurity as AI's Next Big Market
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, pointed to cybersecurity as the next big market for artificial intelligence at a Goldman Sachs conference. Everything ultimately boils down to coding, and since AI has shown the greatest productivity gains in coding, the next derivative markets are debugging and cybersecurity, he explained. As AI speeds up code writing, vulnerabilities are also created and exploited faster, leading to increased use of AI in both finding and fixing vulnerabilities. He added that Nvidia is collaborating with CrowdStrike and expanding its security platform with Cisco and Palantir.
At the same event, Huang said that AI infrastructure investments of $3 trillion to $4 trillion are rapidly becoming a reality by 2030. He countered criticism that Nvidia's investments in companies result in a circular trade by arguing that the scale of the businesses returning investment is far larger than the initial investment.
Domestically, Naver and LG announced on the 18th that they will begin developing security-specialized AI. The plan is to target a model with 700 billion parameters, involving 33 institutions, and to first create models specialized in attack and defense, followed by cross-validation through mutual attacks and defenses to improve performance.
Security stocks surged. Xgate and Sandslab were near their highs at 29.9% and 29.8%, respectively, Dreamsecurity rose 23.3%, and Estu더블유, which joined the OpenAI cybersecurity ecosystem, rose 17.6%. Hansa, Cyberone, Monitorlab, and Genieus also moved. The number of mentions of "cybersecurity" on the channel today was ten times higher than yesterday.
Murata's Partial Discontinuation of MLCCs Sends Amotech Soaring
Murata, the world's leading manufacturer of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), announced that it will discontinue some models in several series. The approval deadline is December 2027, the last order date is March 2028, and the final shipment date is March 2029. This is a reallocation of production capacity focusing on high-margin products, which could lead to pressure for discontinuation of general specifications from Samsung Electronics, the second-largest player.
Domestic energy storage device manufacturers have reportedly been offered capacitor prices twice as high as usual and face difficulty securing supplies next year. The analysis is that customers will prioritize quantity over price since capacitors account for less than 1% of the cost of energy storage devices.
As of late June, Murata's shipment ratio was 1.30, Samsung Electronics' was 1.31, and Taiyo Yuden's was 1.25, with all three exceeding orders. The explanation is that as leading companies focus on AI data centers, industrial, military, and energy storage device customers are turning to second-tier suppliers.
Amotech closed at its daily high, while Samwha Capacitor rose 18.8% and Ava Tech rose 14.0%. Samsung Electronics remained unchanged. Several capacitor-related stocks in China also reached their daily highs.
KOSPI Drops to 6,802 Before Closing at 6,909
The KOSPI closed at 6,909.91, down 1.76%. It fell to 6,802.50 in the early trading session but recovered to the 6,900 level thanks to individual buying. News that Iran and Gulf countries would hold a meeting on the Strait of Hormuz later in the day helped fuel a rebound. The KOSDAQ closed at 820.64, down 1.95%. Individuals bought 1.8658 trillion won, while foreigners sold 2.2915 trillion won and institutions sold 1.2236 trillion won. Foreigners have been net sellers for three consecutive days.
The reasons cited were oil prices and interest rates. West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 6.69% to $102.48, surpassing $100 for the first time since May, while Brent crude was at $107.63. Saudi Arabia's August crude oil exports were the lowest in 13 years, and news that Houthi rebels had seized a key point in the Red Sea contributed to the rise in oil prices. The US Producer Price Index for August rose 5.4% year-on-year, exceeding expectations of 5.3%, and the Treasury Department's actual purchase of government bonds was lower than expected at $5.19 billion, compared to a ceiling of $6 billion. This pushed the 10-year US Treasury yield close to 4.95%. The probability of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve next week rose to 73%, and the European Central Bank raised interest rates.
The New York Stock Exchange fell for the fourth consecutive day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.60%, the S&P 500 fell 0.58%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.65%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 2.66%, with Nvidia down 2.3%, AMD down 3.4%, and Intel down 5.6%. Apple rose 3.6% on anticipation of new products.
Domestically, Samsung Electronics fell 3.53%, SK Hynix fell 2.21%, and Hanmi Semiconductor fell 8.1%. On the other hand, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering rose 3.30% and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries rebounded from the previous day's decline with a 5.6% gain. Financial holding companies and insurers also rose, with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, in which Singapore's sovereign wealth fund acquired a stake of more than 5%, rising 6.0%.
The speed of adoption was more noticeable than the numbers. In the first quarter, 850 megawatts and over 300,000 GPUs were delivered to customers, three times the previous quarter and 73% of the entire previous fiscal year. GPU utilization was 97.9%, and it was revealed that when renewing equipment used for more than four years, contracts were renewed at a value 20% higher than before. The Texas Abilene campus houses 131,000 GPUs, where OpenAI's new model was trained. Since a significant portion of the new contracts were customer prepayments, the actual cash burden out of the $285 billion in facility investment was $180 billion. After-hours stock prices rose 4% to 6%.
News spread that Microsoft plans to increase its data center capacity from about 12 gigawatts to 38 gigawatts by 2032, more than three times the current size. It also includes an increase in AI-dedicated computing from 2 gigawatts to 13 gigawatts.
Three Orders and Ten Days of Exports Worth $35 Billion
Hanwha Aerospace signed a contract worth 641 billion won for the export of Cheonmu multiple launch rockets to the Croatian Ministry of Defense. This is the fourth country in Europe. Samsung E&A secured a construction order for a chemical complex project by Savic, a Saudi Arabian affiliate, worth 2.486 trillion won. The contract period is 4 years and 2 months until December 2030, accounting for 27% of recent sales. GNCC Energy disclosed a contract worth 46.9 billion won to supply generators to LG Uplus' Paju Center.
From September 1st to 10th, exports amounted to $35 billion, an 82.6% increase from a year ago and the highest ever recorded for the same period. Semiconductor exports reached $16.5 billion, up 270.1%, driving the overall growth.

Details emerged about HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' investment the previous day. They will build a 3 gigawatt power engine plant on a new site in Ulsan and expand the Yeongam plant by 1 gigawatt, establishing a production system with a total capacity of 4 gigawatts. The first engine is scheduled to be delivered in the fourth quarter after completion in May 2028.
