Brent oil exceeded $100 and US 10-year treasury yield hit its highest in 3 years

Brent oil surpassed $100 per barrel for the first time since late July. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 3.3% to $96.07. As clashes between the US and Iran continue, concerns about prolonged conflict have grown after President Trump said the war would end after the midterm elections. Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned it would retaliate at twenty locations if it were attacked at two or three targets, and reports said explosions were heard today off Iran's southern coast.

Interest rates also rose. The US Treasury set its buyback size for 10- to 20-year bonds at $6 billion, which is three times the previous $2 billion, but fell short of the $6-8 billion the market expected, or as much as $10 billion. Compared to the newly issued $39 billion in 10-year Treasuries on the same day, it was viewed as insufficient, and one channel said they responded to a bazooka with a toy gun. The US 10-year yield exceeded 4.85%, marking the highest in 3 years, while the 30-year approached 5.3%.

The New York stock market fell for the fourth day. The Dow declined 0.77%, S&P 500 fell 0.48%, and Nasdaq dropped 0.64%, with small-cap stocks falling more sharply as the Russell 2000 declined 1.32%. Only energy rose among the eleven sectors. Semiconductors were different. Meta rose 6.6% after launching personal AI agent Muse and revealing that initial usage was ten times that of the test group, SK Hynix US depositary receipts rose 7.1%, Micron gained 2.8%, and AMD climbed 3.0%, lifting the Philadelphia semiconductor index up 0.4%.

KOSPI fell to 6,898 intraday but closed at 7,033

KOSPI closed down 0.25% at 7,033.92, maintaining above the 7,000 level for the second consecutive day. Starting at 7,039, it fell to 6,898 in the morning but recovered most of the loss in the afternoon, rebounding 136 points from the low. KOSDAQ rose 0.79% to 836.92.

Foreigners sold 2.5 trillion won on KOSPI, marking the largest net sale since August 25, while retail investors and institutions each bought 400 billion won. The quality of demand weakened as concurrent buying by foreigners and institutions ended. It was a day when futures and options expiration and regular rebalancing of Korea Exchange sector indices coincided. As the weight per sector in the semiconductor index was limited to a maximum of 20%, rebalancing sales were triggered for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, with both stocks declining 0.2%.

Oil-related stocks rose. Heunggu Petroleum climbed 20%, Korea Petroleum rose 15.8%, and Central Energyvis gained 9.9%. Conversely, stocks that had risen on US investment and US-China conflict benefited saw profit-taking, with Doosan Enerbility falling 2.0% and Samsung SDI declining 2.3%. Domestically, TSI, which manufactures probe cards and test sockets, set a new 52-week high.
