Optical communication component manufacturers rallied together

Last night, optical communication-related stocks in the US surged in tandem. Lumentum rose 11%, AXT 12%, Corning 8%, and Coherent 7%. Domestically, the same sector followed suit, with Woori gaining 29.8%, RF Materials 23.3%, and Korean Optical Telecommunications 9.3%.

Securities firms identified three catalysts.

First, Corning signed a long-term optical fiber supply contract with Verizon. The contract, running from 2027 to 2032, covers supply of high-density optical fiber and connectivity solutions totaling over 80 million miles and 129 million kilometers in the multi-billion dollar scale. It was specified to be used in constructing long-distance backbone networks across the US connecting major AI operators.

Second, Amazon Web Services and Qualcomm announced a 60 billion dollar AI data center partnership. The agreement includes developing custom inference semiconductors as well as 1.6 terabit-class and next-generation optical connectivity technologies together.

Third, expectations for AI infrastructure demand were supported by the new model OpenAI publicly released last week.

Analysis also circulated that domestic companies are seeing increased orders for optical components in the data center interconnection sector. RF Materials' pump laser package, Laicom's optical amplifiers, and Korean Optical Telecommunications' ultra-high-density cables were cited as examples. This reflects the growing attention to non-Chinese suppliers as global supply-demand imbalances persist.

KOSPI closed above 7,000

KOSPI rose 1.40% to close at 7,051.64. This marks the first time since July 23 that it closed above 7,000. KOSDAQ rose 2.28% to 830.37, and the won-dollar exchange rate fell 4.30 won to 1,337.00.

Supply and demand patterns continued similar to yesterday. Individuals sold 2.288 trillion won on KOSPI, marking five consecutive days of net selling, while institutions bought 941.9 billion won. Foreign investors sold 427.2 billion won in KOSPI spot but bought 524.4 billion won in futures, resulting in five days of net buying when combined. Other corporations also purchased 1.8 trillion won.

Despite both markets rising, many stocks fell. Oil prices and interest rates remained a burden, and with futures-options simultaneous expiration, US producer prices, consumer prices, and next week's Fed meeting lined up ahead, volatility is expected to increase.

US government urged Ford to cut ties with Chinese battery companies

Reports emerged that the US Transportation Secretary urged Ford to sever relationships with Chinese battery companies. The move pointed to Ford's cooperation with companies on the Defense Department's blacklist, the decision not to move Lincoln production facilities from China to the US by 2030, and support requests for establishing joint ventures with Chinese companies within the US. Ford countered, calling it a misguided attempt, stating that it is building battery production capacity within the US and directly owns and operates its factories.

Domestic battery companies gained on expectations of windfall gains. LG Energy Solution rose 6.6%, Samsung SDI 7.9%, SK Innovation 11.2%, and Lotte Energy Materials 14.1%. However, the caveat was added that Ford and the Chinese company's contract has not actually been terminated nor have domestic companies secured new orders, so policy expectations and actual orders should be differentiated.

Overnight in US stock markets, Ford fell 4.24% and General Motors declined 2.24%.

Companies supplying electricity to data centers also rallied

Doosan Fuel Cell rose 19.0% on news of signing a 501.4 billion won contract to supply fuel cells to US data centers. Talk circulated that fuel cell demand will increase as gas turbines become difficult to source. Buhan Fuel Cell also rose 29.8%.

GNC Energy drew attention with analysis showing it holds approximately 70% of the domestic emergency generator market for data centers. With just 8.4 gigawatt projects planned through 2029, an order market exceeding 1 trillion won annually is opening up.

Gaon Cable announced it supplied medium-voltage cables to a public power company in western Canada. This is its first export to Canada and expands its North American operations beyond AI data centers and semiconductor factories to public power grids. The company projects North American sales will grow from approximately 300 million dollars last year to approximately 470 million dollars this year.

Hanwha Ocean was selected as the preferred bidder for Thailand's frigate project

Hanwha Ocean announced that it was notified yesterday of its selection as the preferred bidder in Thailand's navy's next-generation frigate project. The project involves constructing one frigate and handling integrated logistics support, with a contract value of 683.3 billion won, representing 5.3% of recent revenues.

It competed against defense contractors from Spain, Singapore, and Turkey, and its experience delivering the first-phase frigate to the Thai Royal Navy in 2018 reportedly played a role in the selection process. The Thai Navy considers eight frigates necessary, with four currently in operation, so additional orders could expand the project to a multi-trillion won scale.

Other

The US Central Command destroyed five Iranian oil tankers carrying crude oil. This was in response to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps firing ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships over two days, with no US casualties. West Texas Intermediate crude was trading at $94 a barrel and Brent crude at $98 a barrel, and the most talked-about phrase on the channel today was "oil price rise." There were also reports of a ship fire at the Al Wakrah port in Qatar, but it is unclear whether it was caused by an attack.

Details of the Daemitu investment have been released. The Texas Ensinal gas combined cycle power plant project is worth $22.3 billion, the framework for building eight nuclear power plants in the US is worth $120 billion, and the Alaska liquefied natural gas project is worth $67 billion.

There was also analysis that the Korean stock market is still cheap. The 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio of KOSPI 200 is 6.2 times, which is in the bottom 1% compared to its history over the past 10 years, while comparable overseas stock markets are at 68%. Bank of America's bubble risk indicator has fallen to 0.52.

The Financial Supervisory Service Special Judicial Police conducted a search and seizure on a Financial Supervisory Service reporter on suspicion of prior trading. It is said that Samsung Electronics Foundry's Texas Taylor plant, which is scheduled for test operation at the end of this month, has already filled its production capacity. There are also reports that the 2-nano yield has risen from around 60% at the beginning of the year to the recent 80% range. Cosmecca Korea announced that it will invest KRW 136 billion to increase its cosmetics production capacity.

Among US stocks, Nvidia was mentioned the most, followed by Apple, Amazon, and TSMC.
