It exceeded 7,100 during trading but closed at 6,954

KOSPI surpassed 7,100 during trading but fell 0.58% in the afternoon, closing at 6,954.52. This is the first decline in four days. Samsung Electronics rose 3.3% from highs before ending down 0.2%, while SK Hynix's 6.0% gain narrowed to 0.6%. On KOSPI, 231 stocks rose and 634 fell, while KOSDAQ declined 1.25%.

Supply and demand showed the same direction as yesterday. Individuals sold 3.1086 trillion won, while foreigners and institutions bought 583.3 billion won and 802.4 billion won respectively, extending four consecutive days of joint net buying. The other corporations sector, which reflects Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix's share buyback volumes, purchased 1.7588 trillion won—the highest single-day amount since share buybacks began.

The afternoon decline was attributed to the Middle East. News of attacks on Saudi oil facilities emerged, with oil prices remaining in the uncomfortable 90-dollar range. This was coupled with vigilance ahead of U.S. inflation data later this week and the Federal Reserve meeting on the 17th. Some analysts noted the index faced resistance near the 60-day moving average while reclaiming 7,000, while others evaluated that 7,000 itself was a price level difficult to pass in one go. The Korean won-dollar exchange rate stood at 1,344.80 won.

Nuclear power stood alone

On a day when the index fell, nuclear power-related stocks surged significantly. Korea Electric Power Technology rose 16.6%, Orbvitch 29.8%, Daewoo Engineering and Construction 8.5%, Woori Technology 8.2%, and Hyundai Engineering and Construction 5.4%. Nuclear power climbed five places in the theme rankings to take third place.

The background is yesterday's report on investments in the United States. In a 350-billion-dollar U.S. investment project, a Texas gas-fired combined-cycle power plant and construction of eight nuclear reactors locally are under serious consideration, with negotiations over Westinghouse equity stakes and the possibility of Korean-model APR1400 reactors entering the U.S. market also attached. Industry sources noted that while the United States possesses reactor core technology, it has lost capabilities in equipment manufacturing and construction, making collaboration with Korean companies inevitable.

Analysis also emerged that expanding U.S. power infrastructure is a bipartisan task that will continue regardless of midterm election results. Republicans emphasize power security and countering China, while Democrats lead with modernizing the power grid and green transition, but the direction of expanding grid investment and reducing Chinese dependence is the same.

Houthis struck Saudi Aramco

Yemeni Houthi militants announced an attack using dozens of ballistic missiles and drones on Aramco facilities in Abha and Najran in southern Saudi Arabia, as well as Khamis Mushayt air base. Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry revealed fires broke out in several areas with some facility operations temporarily halted, and 73 civilians were injured. While Saudi Arabia kept distance from the U.S.-Iran war, the four-year ceasefire that had been maintained since July has effectively ended with Houthi attacks.

Oil prices hit a six-week high. West Texas crude traded at $94.49 per barrel, up 3.29% intraday, while Brent crude exceeded $98. However, gains narrowed on news that a Strait of Hormuz shipping agreement between Iran and Oman was imminent.

President Trump stated that if the U.S. wins a war with Iran, oil prices would plummet with gasoline falling to $3 per gallon and ultimately below $2 per gallon. On the Iranian side, former President Hassan Rouhani said that if most citizens desire it, the war should end honorably, prompting discussion of a referendum.

U.S. data center construction spending hits all-time high

July U.S. data center construction spending rose 57% year-over-year to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $75 billion, marking an all-time record. This follows a 46% increase in June and represents the steepest growth rate since mid-2025. Since early 2021, data center construction spending has increased $66 billion by 717%, while other private construction spending including housing, shopping malls, and offices has declined by $120 billion over the same period.

Copper is also at all-time highs. London Metal Exchange copper futures exceeded $14,530 per ton, rising 47% over twelve months. With Trump's outlook on expanding copper tariffs keeping New York prices higher than London, arbitrage occurred, and with London physical inventory falling to crisis levels at one point in August, a massive short squeeze ensued. Chile, the world's largest producer, saw August copper export values fall to their lowest in over a year, with the possibility of global mining copper supply declining annually for the first time since 2017 being discussed.

Customers requesting contracts exceeding five years have emerged

Securities analysts cited contract conditions as evidence of strong memory demand. In high-bandwidth memory, one customer proposed over 40 billion gigabits for 2028 purchases, and some customers are requesting long-term contract periods be extended beyond five years. Meanwhile, expectations remain that DRAM production growth in 2027 will be in the early 20% range, suggesting supply shortages will be more severe in 2027 than in 2026.

Chinese demand was also mentioned. With U.S. and Chinese AI data center capacity estimated to grow more than double from 95 gigawatts in 2026 to 201 gigawatts in 2030, China's four major cloud companies—Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance—are strongly requesting long-term supply contracts with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, much like U.S. hyperscalers. The high-bandwidth memory market is expected to grow 69% in 2026 before expanding 164% in 2027, with record-high growth rates anticipated.

Last week's Apple NAND flash memory long-term contract was also confirmed. TrendForce mentioned that there were reports that Apple had signed a long-term supply agreement for NAND flash memory with no price ceiling.

The exchange rate worked in reverse. Lowering the won-dollar exchange rate assumption from 1,450 won to 1,370 won, some securities firms lowered their third-quarter operating profit forecasts for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to 105 trillion 5,000 billion won and 74 trillion 7,000 billion won, respectively. There was also news that Samsung Electronics plans to use ASML's cutting-edge equipment for DRAM production from 2028.

Other

Bight and Electronics was finally selected as the performing organization for the Ministry of Science and ICT's commercialization project for optical communication components and closed at the upper limit. It is an AI data center and a national project to localize 6G optical communication components, and Bight and Electronics also rose 15.4%.

There was a sole report that Sebang Lithium Battery, a subsidiary of Sebang Energy, won orders for battery packs for Hyundai Motor's new hybrid vehicles and LG Energy Solution's new ESS battery packs. Both are long-term supply contracts spanning several years, estimated to be over 3 trillion won in total. This is more than nine times the size of last year's sales of 330.1 billion won.

US investment advisory firm Miri Capital disclosed that it increased its stake in Global Texfree from 5.83% to 8.43%. NearSLab, which received favorable reviews for its interception drones, is being mentioned as a new dispatch stock and rose by more than 12%. Telegram experienced server outages in several countries including India, the US, and Singapore.

Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of US goods, and China's August exports increased by 25%, meeting expectations. The yen-dollar exchange rate fell to the 152 yen range during trading, marking the highest value of the yen in seven months.

In the US market, Nvidia was the most mentioned stock, followed by Apple, TSMC, and Micron.
