Kospi rose 4.6% on the day individuals sold close to 7 trillion won
Kospi closed up 4.61% at 6,995.39. The intra-day high of 6,995.40 became the closing price, just below the 7,000 line. SK Hynix rose 8.26%, Samsung Electronics rose 5.68%, and SK Square rose 8.07%. By sector, machinery jumped 7.48% and semiconductors rose 6.82%. Kosdaq was up 1.07% at 822.19.
Supply and demand were divided. Individuals sold 6.821 trillion won, while foreigners bought 2.553 trillion won and institutions bought 2.633 trillion won. The channel noted that we need to watch how long the individual selling that has continued since last Friday will last. The won-dollar exchange rate was at 1,340.5 won, down 9.9 won, and stock markets in Japan and Taiwan each rose 2.0% and 1.7% respectively.
Although U.S. employment last Friday significantly exceeded expectations, raising the probability of a September rate hike to 60%, the impact on the domestic market was limited. The market appears to be placing more weight on this week's inflation data than employment, and according to channel analysis, expectations that OpenAI's new model will lead to higher memory prices have boosted semiconductor investment sentiment.
Memory shortage forecasts followed OpenAI's new model
OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 Astral over the weekend. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said this model, trained on over 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, marks the arrival of AGI, and added that 400,000 GPUs will be deployed next. Goldman Sachs' trading desk evaluated Astral as showing distinctive performance that outpaces competitors and as what AI bulls have been waiting for.
Memory-related figures followed. KB Securities noted that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix's memory inventory has fallen below 10 days, and forecasted that expanding production of sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory will encroach on general-purpose DRAM production capacity, with demand exceeding supply on a capacity basis by more than 10 percentage points next year for both DRAM and NAND. Hyperscalers' AI infrastructure investments for next year are being raised to $1.3 trillion, up 60% year-over-year, and calculations show that memory's share of that investment will quadruple in two years from 14% last year to 40% this year and 57% next year.
Goldman Sachs' summary of Samsung Electronics' earnings call also circulated. Memory demand fulfillment rates remain at only about 60%, and even if all newly announced production capacity by the industry is activated, tight supply-demand conditions will continue through 2028. TSMC is building 20 fabs, including 13 in Taiwan and 5-6 overseas, yet cannot meet demand, with some saying this rate of demand growth is the first in 30 years.
Musk is building a Doosan power plant
Three companies—Doosan, Doosan Energy Solutions, and Doosan Fuel Cell—are moving together.
A single exclusive report broke that Elon Musk's xAI will build a Doosan combined-cycle power plant. The project supplies power to Memphis-area AI supercomputing infrastructure and will apply Doosan Energy Solutions' gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and power plant auxiliary equipment.
The government's first-priority U.S. investment project has also been confirmed. In Encinal, Texas, a 6.3 gigawatt gas combined-cycle power plant project will be built to meet AI data center power demand, equivalent to the capacity of about six nuclear reactors. The structure involves initially developing 1.4 gigawatts of gas turbines in the first phase before sequentially expanding to 4.9 gigawatts of combined-cycle capacity, with U.S. energy company Lewis Energy Group participating as the project operator. Separate exclusive reports also indicated that Korea's U.S. investment includes construction of eight nuclear reactors and that final signing will occur on the 18th of this month.
Doosan Fuel Cell also rose together on news of winning a 500 billion won order for fuel cells for U.S. data centers. On the same day, reports came that the government increased energy R&D budget by 48% and allocated a record amount to nuclear energy.
LG Electronics said reports that its subsidiary is going to Nasdaq are incorrect
A Korea Economic exclusive report broke that LG Electronics' U.S. robot subsidiary Bear Robotics is challenging a Nasdaq listing. LG Electronics immediately issued a clarification announcing that there are no decided matters regarding Bear Robotics' overseas listing and that it will reissue on October 6. Seoul Economic separately reported that Bear Robotics has begun pre-IPO efforts.
On the same day, news also circulated that LG Electronics is in discussions with global big tech companies on robot actuator orders. Robotis became a hot topic with news of humanoid robot official sales.
