Porting classic DOS games with AI.

4

I often struggle with deciding whether to post it on the AI channel or the development channel.

Still, since most of the work was done by AI, I carefully post it again on the AI channel.

In fact, there are many games coming out these days that are much better in terms of graphics, gameplay, and story,

but those games that filled my teenage years still make me miss them sometimes, for various reasons. (Getting old....?!?)

Recently, GPT 5.6 came out and when I tested it, the performance was amazing, and I thought about what to do with it...

I decided to try porting a classic game I loved so it would run well on modern Windows.

That game was Warlords II, which was released in 1996. There was the initial DOS version and later a version that could run on Windows,

but from what I remember, it was up to XP at best, and after that, DOSBOX had to be used on Windows to

play it, and there were various limitations anyway.

So about 2 months ago, I started working on a Windows native launcher. However, the Plus subscription wasn't nearly enough,

so I paid for the 15.9 Pro subscription for the first time ever.

(I used it for just a month and canceled, but recently they gave me 2 banked reset credits, so I subscribed to 15.9 again.. Tibo...)

And later I found out that someone had also written about it on Damoang ㅎㅎ

Of course, it's true that AI made it, but the consideration and token costs that went into the results were mine, so sharing the article should be fine, right? ㅎ

The left side shows it running with the Windows native launcher, and the right side shows how it ran with the existing DOSBOX.

While porting the existing functions, I also improved the graphics with additional filter effects (similar to HD2D effects),

and I fixed some of the typical bugs that were in the original.

Alongside this, I worked on an integrated modding tool, and the goal was to freely create mods, and users can apply

specific mods or only certain parts within those mods, kind of like programs such as ~~forge.

I wanted to make it that way.

And I also made it possible to overlay high-resolution images for some assets through mod application,

and I also worked on it so that scenarios and events could be freely modified as shown below,,

So I released the test versions of the Windows native launcher and modding tool on Naver Cafe,

and when the Pro 15.9 period ended at one month, I switched back to the Plus subscription.

After that, I didn't touch it again because tokens were running low, but recently with GPT6, I got 2 banked resets!

So.. wouldn't it be such a waste to use this for the Plus subscription?

So with tears in my eyes, I subscribed to 15.9 again ㅠㅠ (again, just for a month,,,,!)

And thinking about what to do, I realized that as I'm getting older, it's hard for me to sit in front of a computer... (tears...)

So I decided to port it to an Android launcher and worked on it over the weekend.

And I ended up with an Android launcher that works well on my Y705?!

Of course, the UI and some convenience features still need organization, and I'm making detailed edits, but I adapted it for mobile,

converting the mouse-based input to touch-based, which improved the inconvenient parts of the existing mobile DOSBOX.

I can enjoy playing it while lying in bed.

The Android launcher also allows the use of mods developed from the Windows version in common.

However, Android has so much device fragmentation compared to PC that it would be difficult to release it publicly,

but with AI available, I think it should be possible for others without too much difficulty.

This concludes my article about porting a classic game from 30 years ago using modern cutting-edge AI technology.
