Stock Market Fell While Memory Surged
Memory semiconductors moved in a different direction that day. SK Hynix American Depositary Receipts rose 8.14%, Micron rose 6.10%, and SanDisk rose 11.90%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index advanced 3.38%.
The catalyst was OpenAI's new model, Astra. With strong performance, the justification for AI inference infrastructure investment was renewed, and expectations grew for increased investment in memory and orchestration. Memory, CPU, optical interconnects, and semiconductor suppliers all saw strength together. Trendforce's announcement that Q3 DRAM market demand would grow further due to expanded AI training and agents, leading to continued supply shortages and rising contract prices, also provided support.
Though overall markets fell due to strong employment figures, a summary circulated in the channel noting that as capital shifted from software to AI hardware, semiconductors, memory, and optical communications surged.
UBS forecasts semiconductor industry revenue will reach $1.63 trillion in 2026, a 118% increase year-over-year, and $2.43 trillion in 2027. For memory alone, revenue is projected to grow 315% to $955 billion in 2026.
As Employment Comes in Three Times Expectations, Rate Hike Probability Exceeds 50%
U.S. August non-farm employment rose 162,000, well exceeding expectations of 55,000. July's shocking figure was also revised upward from a 23,000 decrease to a 21,000 increase. The unemployment rate came in at 4.1%, in line with expectations.
However, it was noted that the gains were concentrated in specific sectors, with 101,000 jobs added in food service, bars, and local government education. Looking at decimal points, unemployment rose slightly from 4.090% in July to 4.141% in August, suggesting the job gains were much stronger than expected, but the unemployment rate retreated slightly.
Following the announcement, Treasury yields rose and index futures fell. On prediction markets, the probability of a 25bp rate hike at the September 16 Fed meeting was 53%, with a hold at 44%, favoring a hike. President Trump said employment had exceeded all expectations by two to three times and urged the Fed to cut rates instead, adding that if they don't, he would cease trade with countries running trade deficits.
New York markets fell with the Dow down 0.5% amid caution over potential rate hikes. Assessments followed that next week's Consumer Price Index would carry even greater importance.
Anthropic's IPO Pushed Back to Mid-October
Reuters reported that Anthropic is expected to begin IPO marketing as early as mid-October and complete its listing in November, ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. The prospectus disclosure, originally expected early next week, has been pushed back to the end of September.
A valuation around $2 trillion is being discussed among investors. Ahead of the listing, Anthropic is finalizing a $15 billion revolving credit facility, with Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Citi participating as lead arrangers.
Plan Emerges to Deploy Unmanned Submarines to Hormuz
A report confirmed that the government is considering P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, explosive ordnance disposal teams, and unmanned submarines for deployment to the Strait of Hormuz. The unmanned submarines, which are in the final stages of development, would be tasked with detecting hazards such as mines and enemy submarines when deployed. A separate report also indicated the government shared deployment plans with major countries, and the U.S. responded positively.
From the U.S. side, Treasury Secretary Bessent said that if the Iran conflict ends, the oil market could face severe oversupply, causing crude prices to fall to $40-50 per barrel, with bond yields and inflation also declining accordingly.
