SK Hynix's HBM Market Share Has Declined from 58% to 50%
Counterpoint Research released Q2 high-bandwidth memory market share data. SK Hynix maintained its top position with 50% based on revenue but declined 8 percentage points from 58% in Q1. This represents a loss of 14 percentage points compared to Q2 last year when it held 64%. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics increased significantly from 21% in Q1 to 33% in Q2. Micron decreased from 21% to 18%.
In the overall DRAM market, China's ChangXin Memory rose from 8% to 10%, while SK Hynix declined from 29% to 25%. Samsung Electronics maintained 38%, and Micron moved from 22% to 24%.
Counterpoint noted that most current high-bandwidth memory revenue comes from 5th generation products, and 6th generation shipments are expected to increase significantly in the second half of this year.
Robotics Was Inside the Company Nvidia Bought
Nvidia announced it will acquire the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, approximately 17.7 trillion won. Hugging Face has over 18 million developers, with more than 3 million models and over 500,000 datasets uploaded. Nvidia committed to maintaining the platform as independent and open, and promised that using Nvidia computing is not required when deploying models on Hugging Face.
This news led to Robotics domestically. Pollen Robotics under Hugging Face started pre-orders on August 27 for a $399 25-centimeter bipedal robot called MicroDuck, which sold over 10,000 units within days. Each robot contains 15 actuators from Robotics. The previously released desktop robot Reach Mini also contains 9 actuators.
Goldman Sachs calculated that fulfilling initial orders of 20,000 Reach Mini units and 10,000 MicroDuck units would require approximately 330,000 additional actuators. This exceeds Robotics' 2025 production capacity of 300,000 units and represents 66% of its expected 2026 production capacity of 500,000 units. A simple calculation suggests revenue would increase from 38.9 billion won to 45.5 billion won, and actuator orders would expand from 410,000 units to 740,000 units.
The Entire Robot Sector Moved Together
It wasn't just Robotics. News circulated that robot-related items were heavily included in the government's next year's budget. The plan includes allocating 30 billion won for public distribution of domestic humanoid robots, supplying 200 research humanoid robots to engineering colleges and government-funded research institutes, and investing 45 billion won in a robot data factory to create 50 robot process datasets across 10 major industries. Localization of core components such as actuators, reducers, and sensors was also included in support targets.
News circulated that SPG's new robot actuator product will enter mass production in September, and that Woonik Holdings is a joint development partner for robot hands related to Meta's humanoid acquisition. Reports also emerged that Chinese robotics company Unitree will establish an AI center in Korea within the year.
In themes, robotics climbed thirteen ranks to reach the fifth position.
Fed Governor Spoke of Two Consecutive Days of Rate Hold
Following New York Federal Reserve President Williams the previous day, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller also indicated support for maintaining interest rates. He said he would keep rates unchanged if inflation data shows no surprising results, analyzed that tariff effects have likely been mitigated, and noted that rising energy prices haven't spread to other parts of the economy.
Following these remarks, U.S. Treasury yields declined 3 to 5 basis points across all maturities, with the 2-year yield, most sensitive to Fed policy, seeing the largest decline. The probability of a 25 basis point rate hike in the September meeting declined from the mid-60% range the previous day to 50%.
New York stocks rose in the 1% range across the board, with the Dow up 1.2%, S&P 500 up 1.1%, and Nasdaq up 1.4%. Tesla rose 5.4% ahead of its Cybercab event, while Broadcom fell 2.7% due to negative reviews of its previously announced guidance. As Bitcoin surpassed $80,000 again, domestic cryptocurrency and stablecoin-related stocks such as Kucoin, Hectofinance, and Woorin Technology Investment also moved.
August's U.S. Services Purchasing Managers' Index came in at 55.4, exceeding both July's 54.1 and the forecast of 54.3, marking its largest increase in six months.
The Culprit Behind the Afternoon Plunge Was a Block Deal
Around 2 p.m., the domestic stock market suddenly declined, with various explanations circulating during the session. There were interpretations that Kuwait came under attack and the Middle East front expanded, that the yen/dollar exchange rate plummeted raising concerns about yen carry liquidation, and that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were shaken by news of ChangXin Memory's 10% DRAM market share.
Looking at supply and demand after market close revealed a different picture. Other corporate trading had shifted from 1.6 trillion won net purchases to 1.77 billion won, and block deals occurred after market close for POSCO International and Woori Financial Group. According to channel analysis, as block deal funds were being secured at the last minute, selling pressure emerged affecting futures, and with various speculation circulating at that time, an atmosphere suggesting bad news had emerged created follow-up selling.
