Following Samsung, TSMC is also raising prices

Following Samsung Electronics raising advanced foundry prices last week, news has emerged that TSMC is also preparing follow-up measures.

The 3-nanometer process has already been raised by 15%, and additional increases of 5% to 10% are scheduled for the 2-nanometer and 5-nanometer processes by early 2027 at the latest. As AI demand has surged, TSMC's advanced production capacity is in short supply across the board, and it has been explained that Apple and NVIDIA are taking most of the 2-nanometer and 3-nanometer processes.

Similar outlook has emerged in the memory sector. An investment bank views high-bandwidth memory as facing severe supply shortages in 2027.

Substrate materials also moved. Major companies in China, Taiwan, and Japan have successively announced price increases for printed circuit board materials, and analysis suggests that across-the-board price increases similar to the first half are starting again.

Price increases are spreading from memory to foundry, and then to substrate materials.

US military strikes Iran again

Breaking news has emerged that the US military has struck Iran for the first time in over a month, targeting mine-launching platforms in the Strait of Hormuz.

Last Wednesday, reports emerged that the United States and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire including navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, causing oil prices and interest rates to fall together. Five days later, the exact opposite news has emerged.

SK Hynix announces 54 trillion won investment plan

SK Hynix has announced additional fab investments at home and abroad following the commencement of operations in Indiana, USA.

The plan is for the first Yongin facility to open its first cleanroom in February next year, and to invest a total of 54 trillion 300 billion won in the commencement of the second factories in Cheongju and Yongin. Up to a fourth factory is planned to be built sequentially in Yongin. Since Indiana is a back-end facility, the possibility of building a front-end factory in the United States and the possibility of investment in Japan have also been discussed.

AI power shortage spreads to energy storage devices

Today, 'ESS' has newly appeared as a top keyword on the channel, and the secondary battery theme has risen significantly.

A securities company compiled four US government policies for AI data center expansion and presented the order of benefits as power distribution networks, energy storage devices, transmission networks, and solar power, which was the catalyst. In Korea, companies with liquid-cooled storage device cooling technology were also discussed.

Nuclear power also followed. News of US-based nuclear power cooperation has circulated alongside articles suggesting that domestic nuclear power technology is breaking through America's AI power shortage.

Samsung Electronics dividend calculations have also come out

Actual dividend estimates have emerged regarding the shareholder return plan announced by Samsung Electronics last week. The forecast is that Q3 dividends will reach 4,570 won per share.

The Q2 dividend paid on the 28th was 374 won per share, so this is more than twelve times higher. This is a figure based on the assumption that the announced 30 trillion won cash dividend is executed as planned. The Q3 dividend record date is September 30.

Talk of taxes also emerged the same night. The combined corporate tax paid by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in the first half of this year is 11 trillion 200 billion won. Samsung Electronics paid 3 trillion 990 billion won and SK Hynix paid 7 trillion 220 billion won, a 167% increase compared to the same period last year. On a first-half basis, this is the second highest on record since 2019, which was right after the memory boom.

Other news

Discussions have emerged suggesting that President Trump is actively reviewing a reduction in capital gains tax. It is reported that the plan includes adjusting capital gains by the inflation rate before calculating taxes.

This week features US employment reports, Broadcom earnings announcements, and Taiwan semiconductor exhibitions.

Among US stocks, NVIDIA was still the most mentioned, followed by SpaceX, Micron, and Apple.
