We compile daily conversations from the stock Telegram channel. Today is Saturday, so the domestic stock market was closed.

Hawks Emerged from Jackson Hole

Overnight, Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Walsh gave a speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium. The channel's summary was condensed to one line: AI is real, and therefore there's no reason to cut interest rates.

Regarding AI, he assessed that it is developing much faster than expected and represents a revolutionary innovation that will change productivity and the economic structure itself as massive capital flows into infrastructure.

On inflation, it was different. He emphasized that the 2% target is firm and fixed, and the Fed's top priority now is price stability. He said there is "work to be done" if core inflation doesn't decline toward 2% fast enough. He cited that the 12-month personal consumption expenditure growth rate is 3.7%, and on a 6-month basis it's 4.1%, both exceeding the target. He noted that while summer indicators came in better than expected, the fundamental trend hasn't changed significantly.

Market reaction came immediately. Betting on a September rate hike in U.S. futures markets jumped to the 40% range.

What stood out was that it was opposite to pre-event expectations. Before the speech, analysis circulated that if Chairman Walsh made policy-related remarks, there was a high likelihood he would lean dovish. The result was the opposite.

The most talked-about phrase in the channel today was "rate hike," followed by inflation and hawkish bias and hawkish remarks appearing together. This came from that event.

Chinese Memory Achieved 92% Profit Margin

The same night, first-half earnings from Chinese DRAM manufacturer Changxin Memory were released. They significantly exceeded guidance provided ahead of listing.

First-half revenue reached 150.3 billion yuan, exceeding the upper guidance of 120 billion yuan by 25.3%, and net income attributable to shareholders was 77.6 billion yuan, exceeding the upper guidance of 57 billion yuan by 36.1%.

The second quarter figures are even more striking. Revenue reached 99.5 billion yuan, significantly exceeding market estimates of 65.5 billion yuan, with gross margin at 92.4% and operating margin at 82.1%. Estimates were 81.1% and 68.9% respectively.

The company cited four growth factors in its half-year report: maintaining DRAM production capacity utilization at top levels, achieving both sales volume expansion and price increases, rapidly transitioning to high-margin products, and stably increasing supply to Chinese cloud and smartphone customers. The report also mentioned ongoing negotiations for long-term supply contracts with several leading customers.

Over the past two weeks, we've continuously covered stories about rising memory prices. Now we have data showing that Korean companies aren't the only ones receiving these higher prices.

HBM Downspec Discussed at Samsung Electronics Meeting

An investment bank held a conference in Seoul where Samsung Electronics had an investor meeting. Four topics were covered: shareholder returns, HBM downspec, memory long-term supply contracts, and memory market outlook.

Downspec means reducing specifications. Last week, reports emerged that Nvidia was considering reducing memory capacity in next-generation products, and now this topic has become an agenda item in Samsung Electronics' investor meetings.

Power Equipment Climbed Eight Steps to Second Place

In themes, power equipment and power cables rose eight steps, construction and real estate rose eleven steps, and nuclear power rose nine steps.

Hyosung Heavy Industries gained attention for large transformer production and expansion news related to U.S. power grid national emergency. Korea Electric Power was mentioned alongside news of Westinghouse stake acquisition discussions and participation in a cybersecurity AI consortium.

This is a trend that has continued throughout the week. AI data centers are drawing electricity, and interest is spreading to the sectors that generate and transmit that power.
