Nvidia's performance was good, but margin outlook was low

Nvidia released its quarterly earnings last night. Revenue of $96.2 billion exceeded market expectations of $92.2 billion and increased 106% from the same period last year. The data center segment alone accounted for $89 billion. Adjusted earnings per share also exceeded expectations.

The biggest surprise was the outlook for the next fiscal year. Revenue was projected to increase by about 70%, compared to market expectations of 44.5%. The company said this was a projection based on limited supply and that demand itself was growing at 100%.

However, the profit margin outlook was the opposite. The next fiscal year's gross margin was projected to be between 72% and 73%, compared to market expectations of 74.2%. The fourth quarter is expected to see a low point, with margins dropping from 71% to 72%.

The company explained the reason itself.

CFO pointed to memory

Words from the earnings call circulated directly through the channel. Currently, memory prices are very high, and the increase has far exceeded the company's previous expectations. It is expected that prices will rise further next year. Supply shortages are expected to continue as a bottleneck at least until the end of the next fiscal year.

The numbers also showed this. Purchase agreements, including memory, increased from $119 billion to $279 billion. The company explained that it is working closely with three memory suppliers to increase the necessary quantities. Price increases for its own products will be applied from the first quarter of the next fiscal year.

This confirmed the stories that have been circulating through the channel for the past two weeks. An analysis showed that memory accounts for 30.8% of the cost of one AI server, and Nvidia raised the price of servers by 15%, citing Korean memory as the cause. There was also a forecast that contracts for high-bandwidth memory in 2027 would rise by more than 50%. Today, Nvidia, which manufactures servers using memory, directly addressed the burden in its earnings announcement.

The same story is read differently from both sides. For Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which manufacture memory, it means that product prices are rising. For Nvidia, which buys and builds servers, it means a reduction in profit margins.

The Bank of Korea raised the base rate to 3.00%

The Monetary Policy Board decided to raise the base rate by 25 basis points to an annual rate of 3.00%. This is the second consecutive increase.

Yesterday, the most common phrase in the channel was "interest rate cut," but today it was replaced by "interest rate hike." "Base rate hike" also rose to the top. The direction has changed again in just one day.

Nuclear power and electrical equipment rose together

In the theme, nuclear power rose nine steps, and electrical equipment and wires rose five steps. This follows the Westinghouse story that has been going on all week.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power was mentioned along with a proposal to invest in a stake in a Romanian nuclear power plant project and Westinghouse. A report on Tuesday said that the U.S. had proposed an acquisition of a stake, and a follow-up report yesterday said that the government and Korea Electric Power Corporation were reviewing it.

There was also positive news in the semiconductor equipment sector. One major brokerage firm projected that the global full-process equipment market would grow by 39% year-on-year to $163 billion in 2026 and by 37% to $223 billion in 2027. This is a 26% increase for the 2026 outlook and a 54% increase for the 2027 outlook compared to December last year.

An acquisition report came out just one day ago and an explanation was released

Yesterday, there was a sole report that Mirae Asset and Toss were acquiring a Japanese securities firm. Today, Mirae Asset Securities issued a public disclosure explaining the matter. It said that it is reviewing the acquisition of a Japanese securities firm independently of Toss Securities, but that no concrete details have been finalized yet.

Half of the report was true and half was false.

Other news

Hyundai Motor Group announced a wage negotiation agreement and a share buyback decision. There was also news that it would introduce sodium-ion batteries. Samsung SDI's plan to sell its display stake and raise funds for its U.S. energy storage business was also in the spotlight.

In terms of U.S. stocks, Nvidia dominated. Amazon and Micron followed, and AI semiconductors accounted for more than half of the themes.
