Every day, we collect and summarize the messages that come through our Telegram stock channel.

The reason why Samsung and SK are using their treasury shares differently has been revealed.

The story of shareholder return, which started last week, was peeled back one more layer today. The different approaches of the two companies have been attributed to regulations on controlling structures.

The directions are completely opposite.

SK Hynix needs to increase its stake. Under the Fair Trade Act, SK Square, the holding company, must hold more than 20% of SK Hynix's shares. However, due to the issuance of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) last month, the stake fell below the regulatory threshold of 20%. Burning treasury shares would reduce the total number of shares outstanding, increasing the stake of remaining shareholders. Therefore, burning is a way to defend the stake.

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics needs to avoid exceeding the limit. The combined stake of Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance in Samsung Electronics common shares is exactly 10%, which is the limit set by the Financial Investment Services Act. Burning shares would reduce the number of outstanding shares, potentially pushing the stake above the limit.

The fact that both are treasury shares but one company has a reason to burn them while the other needs to be cautious highlights this structure. The high dividend payout ratio of Samsung Electronics is cited as the background for this structure.

As a side note, Samsung C&T also rose in tandem. There's talk that if Samsung Electronics increases its dividends, it will increase the dividend capacity of the holding company.

Nuclear power plants have suddenly come to the forefront.

The most widely spread news overnight is an exclusive report that the United States has proposed to Korea to acquire a stake in Westinghouse.

Two methods were reported. One is to acquire existing shares held by Brookfield, and the other is to participate in the public offering when Westinghouse goes public.

Westinghouse is a core of US nuclear power technology and has been entangled with the domestic nuclear power industry over intellectual property rights for a long time. The fact that the proposal came from the US side first led to a large reaction in the channel.

On the same night, there was also news circulating that the US is considering building a fleet of nuclear-powered merchant ships to counter China's shipbuilding dominance. There were also rumors that Korea and the US would collaborate on the project, opening up export routes to Europe and Saudi Arabia.

Today, 'nuclear power plant' has risen to a new position in the top keywords of the channel.

'Semiconductor Tax' took the lead today.

The phrase 'shareholder return' has been the most frequent message in the channel for four days, but today 'semiconductor tax' took its place. The theme also saw a decline in semiconductor market share.

However, the situation is different for US stocks. Nvidia has overwhelmingly dominated the conversation over the past three days, followed by Micron, Alphabet, and Apple. AI semiconductors also account for more than 3/1 of the theme, taking the top spot.

Nvidia's earnings announcement and the Jackson Hole meeting are both scheduled for this week. In Korea, there is a growing sentiment that the semiconductor industry is weakening, while in the US, the conversation is focused on Nvidia. This means that these events will coincide with the current trend.

Overnight, Nvidia announced the start of mass production of an ultra-fast inference accelerator for agent AI.

Secondary batteries have risen for two consecutive days.

The theme of secondary batteries has seen a significant rise yesterday and today. Samsung SDI is in the spotlight. Expectations for energy storage device investments and news of stake sales are both making headlines.

There was also analysis circulating that institutional investors are being presented with opportunities to invest in data centers due to a shortage of domestic supply.

Biotechnology saw technology transfers and approvals.

News that Hanmi Pharmaceutical has signed a technology transfer agreement for a new drug candidate was a hot topic. Oreme Therapeutics announced that its new drug candidate received clinical trial approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

Following Celltrion's product approval application yesterday and D&D Pharmatech's clinical results, this is the second day in a row for biotechnology news. 'Technology transfer' has been a top keyword both yesterday and today.

Other News

The US Treasury Secretary mentioned the general account balance of the Treasury Department as a potential source of funding for treasury bond buybacks. The amount is approximately $950 billion. While it remains to be seen whether this will actually be used, the mere mention caused interest rates to fall sharply.

There was also news that Kolon Industries is about to supply film for foldable products from Apple after more than 20 years of research and development.
