A graphics card repair shop in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, is offering a service that doubles the VRAM of existing Nvidia RTX 2080Ti cards from 11GB to 22GB.
- Cost: The cost of adding 11GB of VRAM is 45,000 yen (approximately $282, or about $25 per GB).
Completed modified used RTX 2080 Ti 22GB models are sold for around $428 to $500.
The modification uses Samsung GDDR6 2GB modules and involves a custom BIOS installation.
Memory bandwidth (616 GB/s) and GPU core performance remain the same, so there is little improvement in gaming performance.
It is specialized for AI model training and inference workloads that require large amounts of VRAM.
If this market expands, wouldn't the demand for building an AI development environment at a low cost without purchasing expensive latest GPUs increase?
Should I buy some used GPUs now...ㅎㅎ
