I'm quoting out right before getting off work.
Memory supply shortages are expected to continue until 2027. Industry sources told the tech publication Digitimes that manufacturers have largely completed negotiations for production capacity allocation for next year, according to a report on Tuesday.
In summary, Samsung (SSNLF), SK Hynix (SKHY), and Micron (MU) have sold out their expected memory supply for 2027 without plans for additional production capacity expansion.
The three major memory suppliers are said to have fully allocated their DRAM and HBM production capacity for 2027.
Customers are reportedly only receiving 60–70% of their initial requested quantities. The report also cited industry sources as saying that the memory shortage will be most severe in 2027.
While allocation amounts have largely been determined, final selling prices are expected to be finalized closer to the delivery date.
According to Counterpoint Research's Global Memory Tracker, Samsung (SSNLF) held a 39% market share in the DRAM market in Q2, ranking first. SK Hynix (SKHY) came in second with a 26% market share, significantly down from its 39% share in the same quarter last year. Micron Technology (MU) followed closely behind with 25%.
Recently listed Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT, which has garnered investor interest, is competing with Micron (MU), Samsung (SSNLF), and SK Hynix (SKHY) in the memory space. Last month, reports emerged that Apple had begun testing DRAM chips from CXMT.
Another recent report stated that major PC manufacturers have started sourcing dynamic random access memory chips from CXMT for some notebook models to address the ongoing global memory shortage.
However, memory chip stocks declined last month. Concerns arose that industry efforts to significantly increase production could lead to a market oversupply in the future, potentially negatively impacting prices.
