Iran, US Expected to Begin Talks on August 3rd
Trump said on August 2nd that he stopped the airstrikes because "Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Iran requested a cancellation of the attacks." He added, "There is an agreement regarding Hormuz," and "there will be another agreement, or what could be called Iran's denuclearization." The eighth article of the ceasefire agreement states, "Iran reaffirms its commitment not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons." Trump said, "What we are trying to do now is negotiate with them through dialogue," and that the talks with Iran "will begin tomorrow (August 3rd) afternoon." He did not mention the location or duration of the talks.
Iran has not confirmed whether it will negotiate with the US, but emphasized the need to abide by the ceasefire agreement. Iranian President Masoud Pezevski wrote on social media platform X on August 2nd, "Iran must force the United States to continue complying with the ceasefire agreement for peace with Iran." He also revealed that there is a consensus among the members of Iran's Supreme National Security Council to acknowledge the agreement.
