A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu, Japan on Tuesday afternoon. The quake resulted in five fatalities, two of whom were found in the rubble of the Aeon Mall Kumamoto shopping center. Thousands of homes lost power and infrastructure damage such as roadways occurred in the area. Although an explosion occurred inside the mall after the earthquake, rescue teams successfully evacuated eight people, three of whom sustained serious injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that no tsunami activity was observed following the earthquake.
