There was an article that said it was practically difficult to supply power to the Yongin semiconductor cluster through (mixed) hydrogen power generation by the government. That's why I've been watching Doosan Fuel Cell, which has been hitting its lowest price since listing.

In the meantime, there was news that LG Chem had developed a technology that could drastically reduce the production cost of hydrogen, so I'm sharing it.

LG Chem has developed a core technology that solves the problem of enormous facility costs incurred when making eco-friendly hydrogen from water.

The company reduced the amount of precious metals used in making electrolyzer electrodes by half while extending the life of the parts by more than twice.

LG Chem announced on the 26th that it has developed a technology to enhance the durability of PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) electrodes, which are key components for green hydrogen production. The research results were published in Nature Communications, a top-tier academic journal, on the 21st.

Electrolysis technology, which uses electricity to split water and produce 'green hydrogen' without carbon emissions, is considered a key to future eco-friendly energy. However, high facility construction costs have been a hurdle to commercialization. This is due to 'iridium,' a precious metal used in the parts (electrodes) that split water.

Iridium is an expensive precious metal, so reducing its usage is necessary to lower production costs. However, using less iridium makes the parts prone to corrosion, limiting their lifespan.

LG Chem solved this dilemma by coating the surface of iridium with a very thin and strong layer at the atomic level. The coating layer prevents iridium from corroding and maintains the robust internal structure of the part.

As a result, iridium usage was reduced to half of the original amount, while extending the time it can produce hydrogen without failure in a high-current environment by more than twice. This lays the foundation for reducing initial facility investment costs and replacement costs for green hydrogen production plants.

LG Chem has completed technology verification by manufacturing large electrodes using this technology. It is currently conducting product evaluations with several global companies and plans to continue technology development towards commercialization.
