Washington — A passenger plane with 64 people on board and an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided Wednesday night over Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and a large-scale search and rescue operation is underway in the nearby Potomac River.
According to authorities, American Airlines Flight 5342, a passenger plane departing from Wichita, Kansas, collided with an Army helicopter while preparing to land at the airport around 9 p.m. American Airlines Flight 5342 was a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet operated by PSA Airlines.
Authorities said late Wednesday that boats were being deployed for rescue efforts to find survivors. President Donald Trump called it a "terrible accident" and reported that he is monitoring the situation. At a press briefing early Thursday morning, authorities said they could not confirm estimates of injuries or fatalities.
"May their souls rest in peace," President Trump said in a statement. "We are grateful for the amazing work our first responders are doing."
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said law enforcement officials "are scheduled to hold a press briefing at 12:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time."
