China Starts Mass Production at its First 8.6th Generation OLED Factory

More than two years after construction began, display manufacturer BOE has started mass production at China's first 8.6th generation OLED factory.
BOE's B16 factory, located in Chengdu, China, is expected to produce 10 million OLED panels for mobile and IT devices such as smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and monitors this year, with plans to significantly increase production next year.
The factory officially began mass production on June 17th.
"We will meet the growing demand for premium displays from customers in China and abroad through leading technology and high-quality products, and become a trusted partner," said BOE Chairman Chen Yanqing.
Asus, MSI, Lenovo, Xiaomi, etc.
More than 10 customers, including Lenovo, Asus, MSI, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, ZTE, Transsion, Xiaomi, and Nothing, attended the opening ceremony to confirm their purchase and use of OLED panels produced there.
The new production facility is expected to produce high-end OLED panels featuring tandem structures, LTPO, and 1-240Hz VRR. The 8.6th generation production line will allow BOE to produce larger and more cost-effective OLED panels than its existing 6th generation factory, potentially replacing LCD panels in consumer products.

China and OLED
BOE's 8.6th generation factory, with an investment of 63 billion yuan in construction, has become the largest single industrial project in southwest China.
The factory started operation just five months after Samsung Display's similar 8.6th generation OLED factory in Asan, South Korea, began mass production to supply OLED panels to Apple and Samsung Electronics.
TCL CSOT broke ground on an 8.6th generation OLED factory in Guangzhou, China, in October 2025, scheduled to start mass production next year. It is expected to be the first factory to use inkjet printing for OLED panels.
In addition, Visionox is currently building its third 8.6th generation OLED factory in China, with production expected to start between 2027 and 2028. These three factories will position China as a strong competitor against South Korea's Samsung Display and LG Display in the OLED market.
All of the new factories are initially targeting small and medium-sized OLED panels, and no schedule has been announced for TV-sized panels.
