McLaren 788HS, a 777-horsepower farewell to the legendary V8 supercar lineup

McLaren has unveiled the 788HS, a hybrid-free final limited edition model celebrating the brand's mid-engine V8 engine. As the culmination of the lineup that began with the 720S and evolved through the 765LT and 750S, the 788HS boasts peak output of 800 horsepower along with extreme track aerodynamics and bespoke customization options.

"HS" stands for High Sport and has only been used twice before by McLaren, in the MP4-12C HS and MSO HS. Accordingly, the 788HS aimed to extract the best performance from its familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine.
Tuned to deliver a peak output of 788 horsepower (777bhp) and 590lb-ft of torque, it surpasses the track-focused 765LT by 23 horsepower and the 750S by 37 horsepower. With the accelerator pedal fully depressed, it reaches 60 mph from a standstill in just 2.8 seconds, and achieves 124 mph in 7.0 seconds before reaching a top speed of 205 mph.

Instead of adding the hybrid system used in the 1,258 horsepower W1, McLaren intentionally focused on mechanical purity and extreme weight reduction. Based on a carbon fiber Monocage II chassis, it has a dry weight of just 2,789 pounds (approximately 1,265 kg), providing a power-to-weight ratio of 623 horsepower per ton.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 7-speed seamless shift gearbox with a shortened final drive ratio. To create a close physical connection between the driver and the car, engineers tuned the engine mount settings so that mechanical vibrations and exhaust note characteristics are transmitted more directly into the cabin.

The aerodynamic changes are the most advanced applied to this chassis, with a 10% increase in overall downforce compared to the 765LT. This package includes a massive rear diffuser inspired by Formula 1, a sophisticated front splitter, and an adjustable active rear wing with both Drag Reduction System (DRS) and airbrake functionality.
In particular, the carbon fiber hood features an S-duct derived from F1 technology that directs air to flow over the front and up into the cabin, while keeping the front wheel axle pressed to the ground without completely sacrificing the front trunk space. The vehicle's movement is controlled through a re-tuned version of McLaren's Proactive Chassis Control III hydraulically interconnected suspension, which is 0.2 inches lower at the front than the standard 750S.

McLaren limits production of the 788HS to just 200 units worldwide, divided equally between 100 coupes and 100 spiders with an opening hardtop. As this vehicle serves as a defining punctuation mark before Abu Dhabi-based shareholder CYVN Holdings begins a comprehensive powertrain overhaul in 2028, all produced vehicles will go through McLaren Special Operations (MSO) for bespoke customization.
Buyers can choose unique options ranging from transparent-coated carbon fiber bodywork visible on the exterior to personalized shift paddles, ensuring no two identically styled models leave the factory floor.
While the price has not been officially announced, the allocated units are expected to carry a premium well above the 750S base price of $365,100.
