Magene C706 one-day review..

I'd been interested in the Magene c706 that a lot of YouTubers have been advertising lately, and when a brand-new, still-sealed unit showed up on the Dosa marketplace, I bought it out of half curiosity, half excitement.

Here's what I noticed after one day of use. I might not be fully adjusted to the device yet or the setup might still be off, so please take this with a grain of salt..

1. If we're talking about buying a brand-new Garmin or Wahoo, the value for money looks pretty solid. There's a fairly big price gap compared to Garmin or Wahoo for comparable features.

2. Free-ride ClimbPro works well. You can turn it on/off depending on the size(?) of the climb. During my ride I had it set above the mid-tier threshold so only two climbs showed up, but it worked fine.

3. There are a few spots where the Korean translation on the device or in the Onelapfit app is a bit off.

4. Since the maps are offline maps, when you first set it up you either have to select all of the domestic regions (roughly 600MB / about 1 hour) or trim it down and save only what you need. If you tour a lot, downloading everything at once might be less of a hassle.

5. I'd almost call the Onelapfit app kind of poor.. it really only functions well enough to save logs.
If you want something on the level of Garmin Connect, you're better off using Garmin or syncing through a different app.
I'm not the type to dig deep and analyze my rides, so it's not a huge inconvenience for me, but I do dislike that tapping to check a workout log again... takes about a 10-second load.

Still, it's convenient that the app lets you configure the device's data fields. You can set up to 12 data fields, and you can even build a data field that includes the map, or one that shows radar status. That said, each of these data fields has a fixed supported size, so you need to configure them accordingly.

6. No support for external TCX files. Apparently you have to load a course in the app (GPX only) and place waypoints there yourself.. I didn't bother trying, too much hassle.
For example, on a 100km course, it's not like there's just one or two uphill or aid-station waypoints, so having to do all that in the app...

7. The device's bell ring is too quiet.. if you ring the bell mid-ride, it feels like only you can hear it. Hopefully it gets louder in a future update... just hoping for now.

8. Lastly, this is a pretty important point for me personally.
The radar warning sound is quiet....and the on-screen indicator is small too...
What I noticed yesterday was that the sound is quiet enough that you can't really tell a car's coming unless you're actually looking at the screen, but even when you do look, the indicator is so small it barely registers. It's even a small orange "<" arrow shape, so in dark mode it's almost impossible to distinguish.
And the warning sound isn't a sharp "beep beep" but more of a soft "ding~" chime, which probably makes it even worse.
I searched around online about the radar feature, but the manufacturer's official site and manual just say it supports radar, and there's basically nothing about it in communities or on YouTube.
(If anyone's using this, how's it going for you?? I've got the volume maxed out and still can barely hear it.)

This is only after one day of use, so there's probably still some setup I haven't dialed in and I might just be missing information, but the YouTubers were all praising it nonstop..I don't know. lol
It'd probably be fine mainly for people who don't currently have a bike computer, or don't have navigation, or are using older products like Garmin's 30 series or Wahoo's 2 series.
Assuming you're buying new rather than used Garmin/Wahoo, that is.

Anyway I plan to keep using it and adjusting to it going forward. But I really wish they'd boost the radar volume via a firmware update.
