My Story of Fighting a Cough: Solving It with the Power of Nature
A few days ago, I was really hit hard by a cough. Was it the flu, or maybe HMPV that's been going around lately… This cough didn’t seem like much, but it made me incredibly weak. Seriously, coughs are persistent and cruel! But luckily, I live in Indonesia, a treasure trove of nature! There are tons of natural remedies available here, aren't there? So today, I want to introduce you to the natural friends who helped me win the battle against my cough.
1. Honey - A Sweet Miracle🍯
First of all, there's nothing better for a cough than honey!
Honey is excellent at soothing inflammation in the nose, throat, and larynx. We especially love using jungle and mountain honey in our home. The raw jungle and mountain honey we get from the local market has a rich flavor and amazing effects. Recently, I found "throat honey" at a Korean supermarket. It seems like honey is a staple remedy for coughs in Korea too!
2. Ginger - Perfect for Dry Coughs🫚
Next up is ginger.
Is ginger like a natural painkiller? It's really effective for dry coughs and coughs accompanied by asthma. Slice some ginger thinly, add it to hot water, and stir in a little honey – voila! You have a delicious ginger tea that’s great for soothing coughs. It's perfect when you can't sleep because of coughing at night.
3. Turmeric - The Hidden Healer in Your Kitchen
Turmeric is more than just a spice for cooking. Thanks to curcumin, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound, turmeric is also effective for relieving coughs. I met a friend who was obsessed with turmeric when I lived in Bali. They kept jars of turmeric candies soaked in honey in their fridge and also brewed turmeric tea from dried turmeric. They were truly a health guru! Thanks to them, I've learned to use turmeric in many different ways.
Glodok, Jakarta: A Shopping Paradise for Herbs
If you believe in the power of nature, Glodok (Glodok) in Jakarta is a must-visit. There are rows and rows of traditional herbal medicine shops that seem straight out of an old Chinese medicine textbook. In particular, Tay Seng Hoo is a famous herbal medicine shop featured on CNN Indonesia. It has a history of hundreds of years and is run by a Chinese family. It truly deserves the title "Herbal Medicine Mecca!"
